50 Encouraging Bible Verses About Mental Strength

As someone who struggles with a chronic illness, I know how exhausting health issues can be both physically and mentally.

But you don’t have to struggle with poor health to realize that life is hard sometimes. (Isn’t that an understatement!) And that developing mental strength can be very beneficial.

The first thing we need to do when thinking about building up our mental strength is turn to God and His Word. Because there are so many things God can do to help us.

By reading, meditating on, and studying these verses we can learn how to be strong mentally, so we are better prepared for the hard moments of life.

The following are some of my favorite Bible verses on mental strength. And they hold some pretty amazing promises from God on how He will be with us and help us to develop:

  • Perseverance.
  • Endurance.
  • And the strength we need to get through tough things.

(But please keep in mind, if you are really struggling mentally, there is no shame in seeking additional support through good Christian friends, your pastor, or a licensed doctor, therapist, or counselor. God works through powerful Scriptures, prayer, people, and pills – prescribed by licensed medical professionals. So, take all the help you can get!)

“Bend down, O Lord, and hear my prayer; answer me, for I need your help.”

-Psalm 86:1 NLT

What does God say about being mentally strong?

A common theme in the Bible is the theme of suffering. Many people in the Bible dealt with some really tough stuff. And yet, as we read their stories, we can see how God was right beside them, working in their difficult situations, the entire time.

This is why when we’re going through times of distress we can turn to the Word of God not only for these inspiring examples but also to be reminded of how much God loves us and His many precious promises to us.

God doesn’t want us to fall apart when things go wrong. Instead, He wants us to learn to lean on Him. To have a sound mind full of confident trust.

Because even in a stressful time, we have the good news of the gospel of Christ.

Jesus has made a way for us to have eternal life. And someday we will leave this world full of strife to spend every day in the Presence of Christ.

What a glorious day that will be!

What is a verse for emotional strength?

“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.”

-2 Corinthians 12:9 NIV

This verse from the Apostle Paul reminds us that it is God’s strength and God’s help that will get us through the tough times of life. Not anything else.

At first, Paul’s statements may seem a little weird.

I mean, we live in a culture that tells us we can do it on our own. We can pull ourselves up by our own bootstraps. And if we just try hard enough, we can make it.

But this simply isn’t true.

Many times, the burdens we bear are too much for us to carry alone. This is why we need God. He encourages us to try a different way.

Instead of trying to grin and bear it . . . He asks us to let go and give it all to Him.

As we lean on Jesus during a tough season of life, the power of God can work in us. Bringing us comfort and peace, no matter what we are facing. Healing our minds, bodies, hearts, and souls. And helping us to experience God’s Presence and grace in amazing and intimate new ways.

He is the Vine. We are the branches. (John 15:5)

And until we learn to lean on Him the way a branch depends on the Vine, we will always struggle in life.

A teal background with pink flowers on the bottom and the words, "Instead of trying to grin and bear it . . . He asks us to let go and give it all to Him."

What is an uplifting scripture in tough times?

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

-Philippians 4:6-8 NIV

This verse is a common one we may have heard before. But we shouldn’t let its familiarity keep us from recognizing the beautiful truths held within it.

Spend some time meditating on this verse. And let God show you that you really can trust Him with everything.

And as you do so, you will find peace. In anything you’re facing.

Because you can hold onto the truths that God loves you. He is in control. And at just the right time, Jesus will make everything right.

Confident that He will give us the grace we need to face anything. And everything.

    his understanding is unsearchable.
He gives power to the faint,
    and to him who has no might he increases strength.
Even youths shall faint and be weary,
    and young men shall fall exhausted;
but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength;
    they shall mount up with wings like eagles;
they shall run and not be weary;
    they shall walk and not faint.”

-Isaiah 40:28-31 ESV

“But this is the new covenant I will make
    with the people of Israel on that day, says the Lord:
I will put my laws in their minds,

I will be their God,
    and they will be my people.”

Bible Verses About Joy in Tough Times

Christ Jesus knows exactly what we are going through when we face tough times because He has been there.

In the 33 years He spent on earth He endured suffering, betrayal, persecution, bodily aches and pains, emotional heartbreak, and so much more.

This is why we can look to Him to help us know what to do when life is hard. By focusing on Him we are reminded that just because we are going through something tough . . . doesn’t mean there won’t be beauty on the other side.

I mean . . . just look at the cross.

These challenging verses are some of the best ones to review and meditate on when we are facing tough times. Because they remind us that suffering can be a good thing. That God can use our hard times to bring us healing and strength. That there is joy even in the sorrow.

And that because of Jesus we always have the hope of a better tomorrow.

“This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”

-Nehemiah 8:10 NIV

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”

-James 1:2-4 NIV

“Dear friends, don’t be surprised at the fiery trials you are going through, as if something strange were happening to you. Instead, be very glad—for these trials make you partners with Christ in his suffering, so that you will have the wonderful joy of seeing his glory when it is revealed to all the world.”

-1 Peter 4:12-13 NLT

“So be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you must endure many trials for a little while. These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold—though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world.”

-1 Peter 1:6-7 NLT

“But he knows where I am going. And when he tests me, I will come out as pure gold.”

Encouraging Verses from the Book of Psalms

Holding onto God’s promises helps us deal with the hard days. The days when it feels like the rain will never end. The days when it feels like we will never laugh again.

And the Psalms are full of wonderful promises we can hold onto.

Read them. Meditate on them. And memorize your favorites. This way the Holy Spirit can bring them to mind during discouraging times.

“When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles.”

-Psalm 34:17 ESV

“For the Lord God is our sun and our shield. He gives us grace and glory.”

-Psalm 84:11 NLT

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling.”

-Psalm 46:1-3 NIV

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed. The righteous person faces many troubles, but the Lord comes to the rescue each time.”

-Psalm 34:18-19 NLT

This psalm of David is one of the best ones to meditate on and study. There are so many comforting promises held within it.

“The Lord is my shepherd;
    I have all that I need.
He lets me rest in green meadows;
    he leads me beside peaceful streams.
He renews my strength.
He guides me along right paths,
    bringing honor to his name.
Even when I walk
    through the darkest valley,
I will not be afraid,
    for you are close beside me.
Your rod and your staff
    protect and comfort me.
You prepare a feast for me
    in the presence of my enemies.
You honor me by anointing my head with oil.
    My cup overflows with blessings.
Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me
    all the days of my life,
and I will live in the house of the Lord
    forever.”

How God Gives Us Mental Strength

God’s Word is our ultimate source of comfort when going through hard times.

Because the knowledge of God is so much greater than we could ever understand or comprehend. He knows so much more than we do about the things we are going through.

And He loves us more than we could ever imagine.

Our Almighty God is powerful enough to hold the whole universe in place. And yet, He cares about the smallest of teardrops falling down our face.

This is why we can be mentally strong.

This is why we can stand tall. Full of confident trust in our Heavenly Father. Because we know He’s got this. And He’s got us.

So, what do we have to fear?

NOTHING.

“If God is for us, who can ever be against us?”

-Romans 8:31 NLT
