Helmet of Salvation Prayer: How to Pray for Spiritual Armor

By Karen Ellis

As children of God, we are engaged in constant spiritual warfare against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. The battles we face are not just physical but also spiritual, and we need to be equipped with the full armor of God to stand firm against the devil’s schemes.

We know we will face trouble in this world because Jesus tells us this in John 16:33,

“I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” (NLT)

Then Paul reminds us in Ephesians 6:10-12:

“Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.” (NLT)

One of the most crucial pieces of this spiritual armor is the helmet of salvation. Just as a physical helmet protects our head from harm, the helmet of salvation guards our minds and thoughts, shielding us from the flaming arrows of doubt, fear, and lies the enemy hurls our way.

Putting on the helmet of salvation is not just a one-time event; it’s a daily choice to embrace the good news of Christ Jesus and the eternal life He offers.

By putting on this piece of armor, we strengthen our minds with the truth of God’s Word, enabling us to stand firm in the face of spiritual warfare and emerge victorious.

The Helmet of Salvation: A Vital Part of God’s Armor

The helmet of salvation is a vital part of God’s armor for us. So, let’s take a closer look at what it is.

What is the Helmet of Salvation?

The helmet of salvation is a powerful piece of spiritual armor mentioned in the Bible. It represents the assurance of our salvation in Christ Jesus and the protection it provides for our minds and thoughts.

Just as a physical helmet shields a soldier’s head from harm, the helmet of salvation guards our minds from the attacks of the enemy, who seeks to fill us with doubt, fear, and lies about our identity in Christ.

When we put on this helmet, we strengthen our minds with the truth of God’s Word and the good news of salvation.

Biblical References to the Helmet of Salvation

The helmet of salvation is mentioned in Ephesians 6:17, where the Apostle Paul instructs believers to “take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”

This verse is part of the famous passage describing the full armor of God, which includes the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shoes of peace, the shield of faith, and the sword of the Spirit.

The Importance of the Helmet of Salvation in Spiritual Warfare

In the thick of spiritual warfare, the helmet of salvation plays an important role in protecting our minds and thoughts.

The enemy knows that if he can plant seeds of doubt, fear, and lies in our minds, he can weaken our faith and hinder our ability to stand firm. However, when we put on the helmet of salvation, we are actively choosing to embrace the truth of God’s Word and the good news of salvation.

This act of faith strengthens our resolve and equips us to resist the devil’s schemes and flaming arrows aimed at our minds.

How do I put on the Helmet of Salvation?

So how do we put on the helmet of salvation? Well, we need to look at two things first. And then 5 practical steps to take.

1) Understanding Salvation through Christ.

To truly put on the helmet of salvation, we must first understand the profound gift of salvation that Christ Jesus offers us.

Salvation is not just a one-time event but a lifelong journey of embracing the good news. Through Christ’s sacrifice on the cross, we are forgiven, redeemed, and adopted as children of God.

When we accept this gift of salvation, we are no longer slaves to sin and fear but are set free to live a life of purpose and victory.

This assurance of our eternal life in Christ becomes the foundation upon which we can confidently put on the helmet of salvation.

2) Embracing the Truth of God’s Word.

The helmet of salvation is closely tied to the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. To effectively wear this helmet, we must immerse ourselves in the truth of Scripture, allowing it to renew our minds and shape our thoughts.

Matthew 4:1-11 gives us the perfect example of Jesus using scripture to combat the enemy. If we don’t read and study the Bible, we can’t use our helmet of salvation to guard our thoughts.

Charles Spurgeon once wrote,

“Discernment is not the ability to tell the difference between right and wrong; rather, it is telling the difference between right and almost right.”

As we study and meditate on God’s Word, we are equipped to combat the lies and deceptions of the enemy. The truth of Scripture becomes a powerful defense against the flaming arrows of doubt, fear, and negativity that seek to penetrate our minds.

3) 5 Practical Steps to Put on the Helmet of Salvation

Putting on the helmet of salvation is a daily choice and a conscious act of faith. Here are some practical steps you can take:

  1. Begin your day with prayer, committing your mind and thoughts to the Lord.
  1. Read and meditate on Scripture, allowing God’s truth to renew your mind.
  1. Declare the promises of salvation and the victory you have in Christ.
  1. Resist negative thoughts and replace them with the truth of God’s Word.
  1. Surround yourself with fellow believers who can encourage and uplift you.

Remember, putting on the helmet of salvation is not a one-time event but a daily discipline.

As you consistently embrace the truth of your salvation in Christ, you will experience greater freedom, peace, and victory in your spiritual battles.

What does it mean to take the helmet of salvation?

Taking the helmet of salvation is a metaphorical concept often mentioned in Christian teachings.

In the New Testament, Jesus often spoke in parables to help those listening to Him understand what He was teaching.

In Ephesians 6:17, the apostle Paul uses the imagery of a Roman soldier’s armor to illustrate the spiritual armor believers need to wear to stand firm against spiritual attacks and challenges.

The helmet of salvation represents the assurance and confidence that comes from knowing and accepting the salvation offered through Jesus Christ. Just as a physical helmet protects a soldier’s head in battle, the helmet of salvation protects the believer’s mind from doubts, fears, and spiritual attacks.

The enemy loves to confuse us and tell us lies. This is where he gets us to fall into the trap of sin. Look back at the story of Eve in the Garden of Eden. The enemy twisted God’s words and deceived Eve. Because she did not listen well enough to know exactly what God had said about the fruit, she fell for the enemy’s lies and sinned.

Here are a few key aspects of what it means to take the helmet of salvation:

1. Assurance of Salvation:

We are encouraged to have confidence in our salvation through Jesus Christ. This assurance comes from understanding and accepting God’s grace and the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross for the forgiveness of sins.

2. Protection of the Mind:

The helmet symbolizes the protection of our minds from negative influences and attacks from the enemy. By focusing on the truth of salvation and the promises of God, we can guard our thoughts and maintain a mindset grounded in faith and hope.

3. Renewal of the Mind:

Wearing the helmet of salvation involves renewing the mind according to the truth of God’s Word (Romans 12:2). This includes rejecting lies and negative thoughts that contradict the gospel message and embracing the truth that sets us free.

4. Confidence in God’s Promises:

We can face spiritual battles with confidence, knowing that God has promised to save, protect, and sustain us. The helmet of salvation serves as a reminder of these promises and empowers us to stand firm in our faith.

In essence, taking the helmet of salvation means actively embracing and living out the truth of salvation in Jesus Christ, allowing it to shape our thoughts, attitudes, and actions in everyday life.

It’s about finding security and confidence in God’s love and redemption, even during trials and challenges.

What Bible Verse says Helmet of Salvation?

The reference to the “helmet of salvation” can be found in Ephesians 6:17, which is part of a passage often referred to as the “armor of God” passage. Here’s the specific verse:

“And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”

-Ephesians 6:17 ESV

This verse is part of a larger section in Ephesians where the apostle Paul encourages us to put on the full armor of God to stand against spiritual attacks and challenges.

Each piece of armor mentioned in this passage serves as a metaphor for spiritual qualities and defenses that we need to cultivate in our lives.

It is through prayer that we can tap into the mighty power of God and receive the strength and wisdom we need to stand firm against the enemy’s attacks.

When we pray, we are not only communicating with our Heavenly Father but also engaging in a spiritual battle. The enemy does not want us to pray because he knows that prayer unleashes the power of God in our lives and situations.
