How To Become A Mighty Prayer Warrior: 10 Simple Ways

When I was first diagnosed with a chronic illness, I called on all the prayer warriors I knew to pray for my healing.

I’ve always admired women who are prayer warriors. You know those women who begin to pray and you can almost feel the Heavens moving in response.

Those women who when you ask for prayer, pray for you at that moment right then and there. The ones who always seem to have the right words to say. And sound so eloquent when they pray.

You can hear in their prayers a closeness and intimacy with God.

While I have always wanted to learn how to become a prayer warrior. I have also always thought it was unattainable for someone like me.

(Who tends to trip over my words and can be socially awkward.)

Little did I know, that God was going to use my season of suffering from a chronic illness to help me grow in my prayer life. And I soon discovered that being a prayer warrior isn’t all that complicated.

In fact, it is something anyone can do.

Can anyone be a prayer warrior?

Have you ever wondered what is a prayer warrior biblically? Well, the truth is the Bible never specifically addresses prayer warriors.

The term “prayer warrior” is a modern-day term for someone who is committed to praying for others.

You don’t have to pray gracefully and fluently. You don’t have to have years of experience. And you don’t have to be in full-time ministry.

What makes a prayer warrior . . . is simply having a heart that cares enough for other people to take the time to pray for them.

Which, quite frankly, anyone can do.

What It Means to Be a Prayer Warrior

The heart of a prayer warrior is all about loving God and loving people.

Because they know prayer is a way to connect with God in a loving relationship. And they also know the best way to love others is to bring them before God’s throne.

Being a mighty prayer warrior is simply about making praying for others a priority.

It only takes a few seconds to pray for someone. And it’s quite easy to find simple ways to pray for others throughout your day.

  • When people ask you to pray for them . . . do so right away. Or make a note to remind yourself to pray later on.
  • Pray for the person standing in front of you in line.
  • Pray for the other cars waiting their turn at a stop sign.
  • When dropping your kids off at school, pray for the teachers, coaches, etc.
  • When walking around your neighborhood, pray over each house you pass by.
  • When an ambulance or police car drives by you, take a moment to pray for everyone involved.

What is the duty of a prayer warrior?

The duties of a prayer warrior are simply to pray for others. And to keep praying for them.

Even when she doesn’t feel like it. Even when it’s inconvenient.

A prayer warrior takes her duty seriously and makes the effort to pray for others.

Because she knows that while she can’t fix everything . . . she serves a God who can.

So, she prays.

Characteristics of a Prayer Warrior

While becoming a prayer warrior is something anyone can do, it will take time, practice, and the Holy Spirit’s help to learn how to make praying for others a priority.

You can learn how to become a great prayer warrior by asking the Holy Spirit to grow the following 10 characteristics in you.

A prayer warrior is:

  • LOVING.
  • REPENTANT.
  • PERSISTENT.
  • DISCERNING.
  • FERVENT.
  • INVOLVED.
  • ATTENTIVE.
  • AVAILABLE.
  • HOPEFUL.
  • SUBMITTED.

1 ) A Prayer Warrior is . . . LOVING.

A prayer warrior is truly concerned about the people around her. She feels sympathy and empathy for them. She takes the time to hear their story and listen.

Her heart often breaks over the things they are going through.

And while it is painful to have such a tender heart, it is also what motivates her to cry out to God for others in fervent prayer.

2) A Prayer Warrior is . . . REPENTANT.

A prayer warrior is someone who knows before she can offer up prayers for others, she needs to have a clean heart before God herself.

She knows she must deal with the log in her own eye before she prays over the specks in others. (Matthew 7:3-5)

So, she confesses her sin, repents, accepts God’s forgiveness, and then prays for everyone who needs to experience the same amazing grace she does every, single day.

3) A Prayer Warrior is . . . PERSISTENT.

A prayer warrior is persistent. She doesn’t give up.

She is committed to praying for others. Because she is confident the Lord hears her prayers.

So, she continues to pray day after day, while patiently waiting for God to answer her prayer in His perfect way.

4) A Prayer Warrior is. .  . DISCERNING.

A prayer warrior understands the deeper issues that need to be prayed for.

While she may hear your prayer request for healing, she also knows what you really need is to grow closer to your Lord and Savior. To learn to trust Him.

And to feel His Presence with you.

So, she prays for your soul needs . . . not just your flesh needs.

5) A Prayer Warrior is … FERVENT.

A prayer warrior prays with a sense of urgency and passion.

In Colossians 4:12 Paul introduces us to a prayer warrior:

“Epaphras, a member of your own fellowship and a servant of Christ Jesus, sends you his greetings. He always prays earnestly for you, asking God to make you strong and perfect, fully confident that you are following the whole will of God.”

Colossians 4:12 NLT (italics mine)

The NIV states “he is always wrestling in prayer for you”. The ESV translates it as “always struggling on your behalf in his prayers”. And the NKJV says “always laboring fervently for you in prayers”.

The original Greek word can mean “to struggle to compete for a prize”.

A prayer warrior woman prays like this.

Because she is fervently pursuing the prize of an answered prayer.

6) A Prayer Warrior is … INVOLVED.

A prayer warrior knows the people she prays for and is involved in their lives.

While she takes time out of her day to serve others by lifting them up in prayer, she also asks God to show her ways she can tangibly serve those around her.

She doesn’t just pray for others . . . she looks for ways to help them.

Like bringing a meal to someone who just had surgery. Babysitting for a single mom who needs a night to herself. Or going out for coffee with a friend who needs some encouragement.

7) A Prayer Warrior is . . . ATTENTIVE.

A prayer warrior is open to the promptings of the Holy Spirit. She listens to His still, small voice and when she feels Him prompting her to pray . . . she prays.

Even if it doesn’t make sense.

Because she knows no matter what prayer method she uses.

No matter how eloquent or simple her words are. No matter how big or small her prayers are . . .  every prayer makes a difference.

8) A Prayer Warrior is . . . AVAILABLE.

A prayer warrior knows God has a different timetable than she does. And His plan may include interrupting her day with a call to pray.

Because she wants to be available for God to use, a prayer warrior also works at keeping breathing room in her schedule.

This way if a divine appointment arrives . . . she isn’t stressed out by it. But rather sees it for the true blessing it is.

Because she knows these opportunities are really divine appointments to do Kingdom work.

And that is the most important work of all.

 9) A Prayer Warrior is . . . HOPEFUL.

A prayer warrior knows God has a plan.

She knows He is in control. And so, she knows without a doubt He will work out every situation for the good of those who love Him. (Rom. 8:28)

Therefore, she prays with hope.

Because she knows no matter what happens . . . God sees her. God hears her. God loves her. And God will answer her prayers in His perfect time.

 10) A Prayer Warrior is . . . SUBMITTED.

A prayer warrior understands God knows much more than she does so she stays submitted to Him and His plans for her.

She trusts Him to lead her to pray for the right people at the right time.

She doesn’t stress out. Or worry.

She simply submits to God and allows Him to lead her.

Benefits of Being a Prayer Warrior

Anyone can become a prayer warrior. And the reasons one would want to are endless.

Prayer warrior prayers move mountains. They make the way for miracles and healings. They send out Angel armies. They cause Heaven to move in response.

Being a part of all these things is an enormous privilege. And many times, a prayer warrior also has the joy of seeing her prayers answered.

But even if she doesn’t . . .

A prayer warrior knows she will never regret the time she spent in prayer.

Because while she may not see all her prayers answered here on Earth . . . she will be shocked when she enters Heaven . . . and God shows her what all her hard prayer work has done.

The lives that were changed. The people that will be there.

All because a mighty prayer warrior decided to pray.
