13 Powerful Prayers for Mental Strength in Difficult Times

Struggling with poor health has completely changed my life. But not everything has been bad.

One of the good things that has come from learning to live with a chronic illness is increased mental strength.

Facing physical illness and health conditions that will never go away has forced me to lean heavily on God’s love and the Presence of God in my life. Which in turn has helped to build up my faith, resilience, perseverance, and mental toughness.

It taught me to pray more. To read God’s Word more. To practice Biblical meditation on meaningful Bible verses.

And to remember that while I may not be able to see what is happening, I can choose to trust the God who loves me and knows everything.

The best prayers are those offered up in faith. When we don’t understand but choose to trust God anyway.

But this can be hard to do.

Sometimes we don’t even know where to start. Or what words to say. This is why we’ve put together a collection of prayers on praying for mental toughness in difficult times.

The following prayers for mental strength will help you get started in your prayer time with God, so you can learn to lean on Him for the mental strength you need in your greatest times of need.

*A special note from Rich Faith in Poor Health: The following prayers are meant for those dealing with everyday struggles, the stresses of life, and difficult trials. While prayer is great and we think it should be the first thing you do, it may not be the only help you need.

If you’re really struggling mentally, or you’re dealing with mental health issues or mental illnesses, then please seek professional help from spiritual leaders, medical professionals, or good Christian therapists or counselors.

A Prayer for Mental Strength in a Time of Need

Dear God,

I need a beacon of hope in my time of need. I need You to help me to stay focused on You. And not the wind and waves of chaos surrounding me.

When my anxious thoughts try to get the best of me, help me to take a deep breath and remember You are right beside me.

Help me to cling to the truths I know:

  • You are good.
  • You love me.
  • And You will never leave me.

And as I remember, reflect, and meditate on these truths, may they bring peace and serenity to my weary heart and soul.

A Prayer for Mental Strength in Difficult Times

Good Lord,

I know You are good. And yet right now, life is not good. My mind is full of worry and fear over the tough times I’m facing.

I can’t stop the thoughts from racing. I can’t help but consider all the “what ifs.” And I can’t stop trying to figure out a way to fix this.

Everything feels so out of control. And yet, I know You have not left Your throne. Help me learn how to accept both good and bad from Your hand. Knowing You are working all things out according to Your perfect plan.

Help me to stop thinking about all the unknowns. And instead, focus on what I do know.

  • You have a plan.
  • You know exactly what is going to happen.
  • And You already know how You’re going to work it all out for my good.

Because of Your great love for me.

This is why I can confidently declare, gracious Lord, that even in the face of adversity, You will always be with me. And even in my darkest hours, You are the hope I can hold onto. Because I know without a doubt, my God will see me through.

Amen.

A Prayer for Mental Strength for a Family Member

Dear Heavenly Father,

I come before Your throne today to ask for mental strength for a family member I dearly love. I know they’re dealing with some heartbreaking things. And the enemy would love nothing more than to use what they’re going through to push them away from You.

He would love to use these hard days to break them. And yet, I know You can use it to remake them.

To grow their faith. To build up their prayer life. And to help them experience Your loving Presence in new and intimate ways.

Protect them from the enemy’s attacks. Strengthen their mind for this fight. And help them to lean on You in their greatest times of need.

Help them to remember that You passionately love them and You are in control of everything.

Thank You, Lord, for all You’re going to do in this situation for their good. And Your glory.

Amen.

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

-Isaiah 41:10 NIV

Help me to strengthen my mind so I can resist the enemy’s lies. And teach me to keep my eyes fixed on You and what I know to be true.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

I’m asking You to strengthen my heart and mind so I can find comfort and peace even when it feels like my world is unraveling.

I need your loving Presence in my life so I can rest and have a good time without dealing with fearful and worried thoughts racing through my mind.

Help me to rest peacefully in Your arms. Knowing You will keep me safe from harm. Until that blessed day when I will enter Your eternal Holy rest.

In a place where I will never again feel fearful or anxious.

A Prayer for Mental Strength to Trust God’s Divine Plan

Everlasting God,

It feels like so much time has passed since I prayed for You to fix this situation. And yet it feels like nothing has changed.

I don’t understand why You’re making me wait. I can’t comprehend how this could possibly be a part of Your great plans for me. And I’m really struggling with my faith.

And yet, Your Holy Word says:

  • You will work all things out for my good. (Romans 8:28)
  • Your ways and thoughts are so much higher than mine. (Isaiah 55:8-9)
  • And You will make everything new and right at the proper time. (Revelation 21:5)

So, help me to cling to these truths. To remember the hope I have in You for a better tomorrow. And all the other precious promises You have made to me.

Build up my faith as I wait.

Help me to trust in Your divine plan. Even when I don’t understand.

Because while I may not be able to see what You’re doing . . .

  • I know You’re working.
  • I know You love me.
  • And I know You are good.

So, in the end, it will all be good. And until then, I choose to trust You.

Amen.

Eternal God,

In my darkest moments, may your light shine in my life. To heal my heart. And strengthen my mind.

I need the comfort of Your love to surround me. To help me to find the resolve to keep going. To not grow weary of doing good. (Galatians 6:9) And to persevere in my faith even when life is hard.

Help me to cling to the hope I have in You. The hope that it will all be worth it in the end. When I enter Heaven and see Him. My precious Jesus.

Amen.

-Galatians 6:9 NIV

A Prayer for Mental Strength over Failing Physical Health

Almighty Father,

I need more mental strength right now to deal with my failing physical health. It can be so hard to stay positive when everything feels like it’s falling apart. And yet, I know even now, You’re holding onto my heart.

I don’t know what the future holds. But You do.

Help me to choose to trust You. To keep my eyes on Jesus. To stay focused on Your great love for me. And not the pain caused by my suffering body.

Help me maintain a positive attitude. So, I can shine the light of Jesus on all those around me. And maybe, just maybe, they will begin to wonder why I have a smile on my face . . . even while dealing with so much heartache and pain.

And then I can tell them all about You.

Because it is only the hope I have in You that can give me the mental strength I need to keep going. And this is why I can choose to trust You no matter what my body decides to do.

Because I love you, Lord. And I know You dearly love me.

Amen.

Help me to stand firm in my resolve to do whatever it takes to get my finances in a better position.

I know that everything I have is because of You. Please, teach me to steward it well. So, I may bring glory and honor to You.

Your divine love sustains me when the wounds of the world assault my heart. And everything feels like it’s falling apart.

A Prayer for Spiritual Strength

Holy Spirit,

Help me to remember that time with you is not just something to mark off my to-do list but rather a chance to sit still in Your Presence.

To lay all my worries and fears at your feet. And receive Your love and peace. Which can help me find the spiritual strength to face anything. Because I know my God is with me. (Philippians 4:13, Romans 8:31)

Help me to put on the full armor of God which includes the helmet of salvation to protect my mind and give me mental strength.

Remind me of all You’ve done for me. And the future awaiting me.

Because remembering the joy of my salvation is what can help me to find the joy in the journey. No matter how hard the journey gets.

In Christ Jesus Name, Amen.

“This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”

-Nehemiah 8:10 NIV

Truths to Build Mental Strength

I hope these powerful prayers were of some encouragement to you. That they will inspire you in your own prayer time. And that they will help you remember some of the most hope-filled truths in God’s Word.

Truths we can cling to. No matter what we are going through.

Because nothing can change the fact that:

  • We are dearly and passionately loved. (Romans 8:38-39)
  • That Jesus Christ our Lord is always with us. (Deuteronomy 31:8)
  • And the mighty hand of God is always at work in our life. (Jeremiah 29:11)

Jesus told us that in this world we WILL have trouble. (John 16:33) We will face hard times. But He also told us to take heart because He has overcome the world.

Because of Jesus we know that we are not alone. Because of Jesus we know this world is not all there is. Because of Jesus we know what happens in the end.

And in the end . . . WE WIN!

And remembering these truths helps us to build up the mental strength we need to keep going. To keep fighting the good fight of faith. (1 Timothy 6:12)

And to keep doing what we can to make a difference in this dark world that desperately needs to see the hope we have in Jesus.

“Fight the good fight for the true faith. Hold tightly to the eternal life to which God has called you, which you have declared so well before many witnesses.”

-1 Timothy 6:12 NLT
