Read through these ideas in further detail below. But don’t feel overwhelmed. Just take the ideas that you think will help you. And leave the rest.
It’s not about being perfect. It’s not about marking something off our to-do list.
It’s about finding what works with our personalities and schedules so that we can spend more time in prayer.
1) Ways to Pray . . . The First Five Minutes.
Make your quiet time with God the very first thing you do each morning.
What you do with your first five minutes has a profound impact on the rest of your day. It sets the tone. Gets you in the right mood.
This is why it is so important to start your day with God.
When you take the time to read His Word and pray right away, it helps to prepare your heart and mind for whatever may come your way.
This may mean getting an alarm clock. . . and putting your phone out in the living room to charge at night.
So that rather than being tempted to check your phone when your alarm goes off . . . you are fully prepared to check in with your God.
2) Ways to Pray . . . Pray as You Worship.
Turn on some worship music while you get ready for the day.
Many worship songs are simply prayers put to music. So, as you listen to a song, you can sing the words as a prayer to God.
It’s not a new thing.
The psalms are written songs in the Bible that were intended to be sung in worship.
One of the most fun ways to pray is to crank up your favorite song as you dance and sing a beautiful prayer to your King.
“Praise the Lord, all nations! Extol him, all peoples! For great is his steadfast love toward us, and the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever. Praise the Lord!”
-Psalm 117 ESV
3) Ways to Pray . . . One Minute Prayers.
Before you walk into your house after a long day. Or into the school or daycare to pick up your kids . . . take one minute to pray.
Spending a few moments reconnecting with God can go a long way in getting your heart right before you dive into the chaos of everyday life.
And there’s no excuse if you are really busy.
Because it only takes a minute.
But that one minute . . . can make a HUGE difference.
4) Ways to Pray . . . Pray Through Your Home.
Take a prayer walk through all the rooms of your home.
As you go through each room, take the time to pray for specific things God brings to mind.
Pray in the Kitchen
Thank God for providing you with food. And ask Him to bless everyone who sits at your table.
Pray in the Living Room
Thank God for providing you with a place to gather with other people. Ask Him to help you love and serve on them.
Pray in the Bedrooms
Thank God for each person whose room you walk through. And take some time to pray for their specific needs.
Pray in the Master Bedroom
Thank God for the gift of marriage and for giving your spouse to you. Pray for protection over your marriage and for any of your spouse’s current needs.
Pray in the Bathroom
Thank God for washing you clean of all your sins. Pray that everyone who enters this room will come to a place where they can be forgiven and washed clean in Him.
Pray in the Entryway
Thank God for the ability to open your home up to others. And ask Him to help you be a blessing to everyone who walks through that door so you can show them His love.
Pray in the Basement
Thank God for bringing you out of the darkness into the gloriousness of His light. Thank Him for helping you to build your life on the firm foundation of His love. And ask God to help everyone in your home to build their life on this same firm foundation.
Pray in the Laundry Room
Thank God for being a safe place to confess our daily sins. Just like clothes are cleaned and then need to be washed again. When you find yourself back in the muck of sin, you can always come back to Him to be forgiven.
5) Ways to Pray . . . Set a Prayer Alarm.
Set an alarm on your phone throughout the day to help you find a few minutes to pray.
When you are busy and stressed . . . Jesus can give you rest.
As you spend just a few minutes reconnecting with the Vine that gives you life, you will find the sustenance and strength you need.
A great way to do this is through an app like the Prayminder App. This app will go off at random times during the day to remind you to pray for certain things.
If you need a more structured time, simply set an alarm for times when you know you will have a few minutes . . . like on a lunch break.
6) Ways to Pray . . . Light a candle.
Light a candle when you are home. And whenever you look at the flame, take a moment to pray to the Light of the World.
Not only will your house smell great . . . but you will also be spending more time in prayer.
Which is a great way to spend your day!
“When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
-John 8:12 NIV
7) Ways to Pray . . . Fasting & Prayer.
Try fasting from a meal and spend the time you would have been eating . . . in Scripture reading and prayer.
Remembering that “man does not live by bread alone. But by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” (Matthew 4:4)
OR
Fast from something else.
Like TV. Or social media.
Taking a break from technology can be freeing. Try it for a day. And every time you are tempted to grab the remote or your phone . . . turn to God in prayer instead.
8) Ways to Pray . . . Walk Around & Pray.
Go for a walk around your neighborhood and pray for each home as you walk by.
If you are like me and can’t walk far, another way to do this is to go for a bike ride. (I have a recumbent bike that makes this easier.)
You can also simply sit outside and go on a “mental” walk.
Think about each home on your block and take some time to pray for the people who live there.
Believe me, they could use your prayers.
9) Ways to Pray . . . Get outside.
Find a place like a park by a river, a clearing in the woods, or a beach. And spend 15 minutes listening to all the sounds of nature while worshipping your Creator.
There is just something about nature that inspires praise and worship of God.
Maybe that is why Jesus said, that even if people keep quiet . . . the very rocks will cry out. (Luke 19:40)
All of creation is singing God’s praises every single day. When you sit out in nature, you have a chance to be a part of that song.
“Let the sea resound, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it. Let the rivers clap their hands, let the mountains sing together for joy; let them sing before the Lord.”
-Psalm 98:7-9 NIV
10) Ways to Pray . . . Turn Your Drive into a Prayer Ride.
Instead of listening to music, turn off the radio. And as you drive to work, run errands, or any other time you are in the car . . . use this time to pray.
Turn your drive into a prayer ride.
Life can be noisy. By turning off everything and sitting in silence, you can spend those precious moments praying and listening to what God has to say to you.
While music is great, and there is a time and place to sing praises to your King. Taking the time to pray and quiet your mind before Him is a very smart use of your time.
How to Pray
To know how to pray we simply need to know how to talk and listen.
We have to take the time to talk with God. And then listen to what He has to say to us.
It doesn’t matter what prayer methods we use . . . it just matters that we pray.
Just like when we converse with the people around us who we love and who are important to us.
When we make time to pray, we are showing God how much He means to us.
Because prayer is a conversation . . . with the One who loves us without reservation!
